These skills are slowly disappearing from the mainstream because they can't be learned by just reading a book or watching a video, they need to be experienced. In the past these skills were passed-on from person-to-person as a matter of necessity, but now many of us grow up never experiencing the need to fix something, or with the expectation that we are just stuck with the things we can buy off-the-shelf.
