What is a Leanpub Organization Membership?
A Leanpub Organization Membership is a subscription for companies, teams, and institutions that want to provide their employees or members with access to Leanpub's library of books and courses. It comes with book credits and course credits that can be distributed to team members, letting them choose the learning resources most relevant to their work.

Most books cost 1-2 book credits, and most courses cost 1 course credit. You can also buy additional credits at any time from the Buy Credits page. This means no purchase orders, no expense reports, and no procurement delays. Your team gets instant access to the learning resources they need.
How is this different from a Reader Membership?
A Reader Membership is for individual readers. An Organization Membership is designed for companies and teams. With an Organization Membership, you get credits that can be shared across your team, centralized billing, and the ability to manage learning at the organizational level. It's the difference between buying individual gym memberships for each employee versus getting a corporate membership that covers everyone.
Can my team members access the 2000+ Free With Membership books?
Team members who also have their own Reader Membership get access to the 2000+ books that are Free With Membership. The Organization Membership provides credits for purchasing any Leanpub book or course, which is ideal for teams that need specific, often premium, technical content.
How many team members can use our Organization Membership?
Your Organization Membership credits can be used by any team members you invite to your organization. You can invite as many learners as you need. The number of books and courses your team can access depends on the number of credits in your plan and any additional credits you purchase.

What are book credits and course credits?
One or more book credits can be used to purchase any Leanpub book, and one or more course credits can be used to purchase any Leanpub course. Every Leanpub book and course has a credit price listed on its store page. When you use credits to purchase a book or course, you don't pay anything extra. Most Leanpub books cost 1-2 book credits, and most courses cost 1 course credit.
Why are book credits and course credits separate?
There are two reasons: (1) books are typically much cheaper than courses, so a single credit type would either overvalue books or undervalue courses, and (2) book credits and course credits need to be taxed differently in the EU and UK due to different VAT rates for ebooks versus online courses.
How do credit prices for books and courses work?
By default, the credit price is calculated by dividing the minimum price of a book by $25, or the minimum price of a course by $125, and rounding up. So a $19 book costs 1 book credit, and a $39 book costs 2 book credits. A $99 course costs 1 course credit. Authors can also choose to offer discounted credit pricing, so your credits may go even further.
Do author royalties still work with credit purchases?
Yes! When your team uses credits to purchase a book or course, the author still earns excellent royalties, typically the same as a minimum-price purchase. Leanpub pays 80% royalties, which is why the best authors choose to publish on Leanpub and keep their content current. This means your organization's learning investment directly supports the experts creating the content your team relies on.
How does my Organization Membership support Leanpub authors beyond credit purchases?
In addition to the royalties authors earn from credit purchases, we contribute to a Royalty Pool that supports authors of books which are Free With Membership. The royalty pool contribution is based on your seat tier — all seats get the same rate: $29.50/year per seat for 1-5 seats, $24.50/year per seat for 6-10 seats, $19.50/year per seat for 11-50 seats, and $14.50/year per seat for 51+ seats. For example, a Team plan with 5 seats contributes $147.50/year ($12.29/month) to the Royalty Pool, while a Department plan with 15 seats at the $19.50 rate contributes $292.50/year ($24.38/month).

How does billing work?
Organization Memberships are billed monthly or annually, just like our other memberships. You get a single invoice for your organization. Annual billing offers a significant discount compared to monthly billing. You can upgrade, downgrade, or cancel at any time.
Is there a free trial?
We offer a free Organization Membership tier so you can explore how Leanpub works for your team. The free tier doesn't include credits, but it lets you set up your organization and see the platform. When you're ready to provide credits to your team, simply upgrade to a paid plan.
How do taxes like VAT work for credits?
Book credits are taxed like Leanpub ebooks, and course credits are taxed like Leanpub courses. For EU and UK organizations, this means book credits get the ebook VAT rate (often reduced or zero), while course credits get the standard VAT rate for online courses. This is correct because each credit type is a single-purpose voucher. For example, in the UK, ebooks are taxed at 0% VAT while online courses are taxed at 20% VAT.
Can we track what our team is learning?
Organization admins can see credit usage across their team, including how many credits have been allocated and used. This gives you visibility into your organization's learning investment without micromanaging what individuals choose to read.
