Kaizen of the Day 100

A Companion to Ishi: The Discipline of Determined Intent

One hundred Kaizens. Four phases. One discipline.

Kaizen of the Day is a companion to Ishi: The Discipline of Determined Intent, built to turn the Ishi Spiral into daily practice. Each entry is small, bounded and practical. Decide. Forge. Persist. Reflect. Read in sequence or open to the phase that matches the problem in front of you.

This is not a book of motivation. It is a book of governed action.

About the Book

Kaizen of the Day (100) is a companion to Ishi: The Discipline of Determined Intent. The main book sets out the Ishi Spiral in full. This volume brings that work down to the level of daily use. One hundred Kaizens, each bounded, each practical, each sized to fit within the conditions of an ordinary day.

Most of us do not break a commitment through lack of effort. The break usually happens earlier. The decision was loose. The practice lacked structure. Persistence ran hot, then drifted, or it hardened into something that should have stopped. Reflection came too late to correct the fault. The same pattern repeats often enough that it starts to look like a motivation problem. In most cases it is a governance problem. That is the ground this book stands on.

The book follows the four phases of the Ishi Spiral: Decide, Forge, Persist and Reflect. Each phase contains five themes. Each theme contains five Kaizens. The structure is deliberate. It allows a full reading from front to back, and it also allows selective use when a reader knows where the present problem sits. A poor decision calls for one part of the book. A weak practice calls for another. Drift, overextension, repetition without correction and failure to examine outcomes all have a place here.

Why Kaizen? Change or growth rarely hold through scale or intensity alone. A small act can be repeated. A repeated act can be governed. A governed act, carried across weeks and months, begins to alter conduct rather than aspiration. That is the point of the format. These entries are not prompts for agreement. They are points of contact with the discipline. One action today. One correction held long enough to register. One bounded move that shifts the next day rather than merely decorating the current one.

This book can stand on its own. Each Kaizen carries enough weight to be used in isolation. The value deepens when the entries are read in relation to the wider framework set out in Ishi: The Discipline of Determined Intent. The Spiral gives the work its logic. The Kaizens give the logic a daily surface. Used together, the two books form a discipline rather than a set of ideas.

This is a practical book for people who want to govern effort with more care. It is built for repeated use. Read it in sequence. Read one entry each morning. Open it at the phase that matches the problem in front of you. The method matters less than the contact. What matters is that the reading turns into practice, and the practice turns into a different standard of self-governance.

About the Author

Gareth Holebrook

Gareth Holebrook works with executives, senior engineers, and coaches on the governance of sustained performance.

A former Royal Navy engineer and agile transformation specialist, he has led teams at Visa and partnered with L. David Marquet on Intent-Based Leadership. His work addresses the gap between committing to difficult outcomes and maintaining coherence under pressure without drifting into burnout.

He has competed in dozens of ultra-endurance events, including the Ironman World Championship in Hawaii and the Kiwiman Double Extreme Triathlon. The discipline required to persist without breaking translates directly to leadership, engineering and organisational change.

The Ishi Spiral emerged from this intersection. His book, Ishi: The Discipline of Determined Intent, launched in January 2026 and establishes the discipline of self-governance grounded in Japanese philosophy, deep theory and lived practice.

He writes regularly on Substack at https://substack.com/@garethholebrook and speaks on disciplined persistence in North America and Europe.
