After 11 p.m., once the baby was asleep, my second day began.
I would sit down and talk to an AI. "Make it so points get topped up automatically when a payment clears." The code was done before my coffee went cold, and minutes later it was running on a real server. The first time, it felt like magic.
Then one night a single malformed f-string took down the entire domain. Not just the chatbot — the blog, the admin pages, the landing page. The server had worn itself out restarting the dead process eighty-six times. That was the night I found out what I actually had. It was not a service.
There are plenty of books about how to build software with AI. This one starts where those books end: right after you press deploy.
I am a developer on parental leave. No coworkers, no code reviewer. My teammate was a single AI. My equipment was one ordinary desktop with no usable GPU. Under those conditions I built and ran a live service for four months — with real users, real payments, and real incidents.
