Unity Developer Pearls

Production Lessons from Ten Years of Immersive Tech

Unity Developer Pearls

Most Unity books teach you to make a game. This one is about making Unity survive a real client, a real network and a real deadline: HoloLens on a factory floor, live VR streaming, WebGL in a browser tab, kiosks nobody supervises, and a team sharing one repository.

About the Book

Unity Developer Pearls is a collection of hard-won lessons from ten years of shipping Unity in places the tutorials don't cover: HoloLens and mixed reality, live telemetry streamed to VR headsets, a React and Unity WebGL conference, enterprise CAD and digital-twin pipelines, event kiosks and generative AI features.

It opens with Part Zero, "Build Fast With AI": the real story of directing AI agents to build four tested Unity templates in parallel, and the hacks that made it work (the brief, tests as the judge, never letting an agent touch the live project, and gating before you sell).

It is written by a working developer, so it tells you what broke and what was cut as well as what worked. Every chapter pairs a real project with one core pattern, the code that carries the idea, a hands-on challenge and a short sprint recap. Hot takes are marked as opinion, and tall tales are labelled as theatrical retellings of a true core.

Inside: eighteen chapters in nine parts, from AI-era workflow and generative asset pipelines to MRTK, VR telemetry, WebGL, CI/CD, legacy refactoring, testing, problem-solving and teamwork with Git. A prologue about learning Unity in 2013 and being told "you obviously just used scripts". A letter to newcomers. An appendix of small-team success stories from Thomas Was Alone to Gorilla Tag. And an SDK field guide covering UI Toolkit, Rive, AVPro Video, Cesium for Unity, Tiledmedia, Photon Fusion, PUN and Unity's networking services.

The code: every chapter has a matching folder in a public companion Unity 6 project, with 112 automated EditMode tests that pass in Unity 6000.4.2f1 and a findings file listing the bugs that testing caught. Listings that depend on third-party SDKs were not compiled, and nothing was run on a headset, console or phone, so test everything in your own project.

Who it is for: developers who have already shipped something in Unity and want to work on enterprise, XR, web and installation projects. It is not a beginner's tutorial.
