Forged in the academic and creative battlegrounds of the Central Academy of Fine Arts (CAFA) and the Beijing Film Academy (BFA), this work introduces an original theoretical paradigm to the global stage—one that bridges the gap between Bazin’s ontology and the clinical rigor of on-set practice.
A Syllabus of "Logic Seeds"
This is not a traditional narrative text, but a condensed syllabus of cinematic formulas. Every line is a distillation of thirty years on set and seventeen years of theoretical synthesis. These are "Logic Seeds" designed to be expanded into comprehensive masterclasses for the next generation of visual storytellers.
The CINE-map: The Geometry of the Soul
Moving beyond the ambiguity of literary scriptwriting, the second part of the book unveils the CINE-map. Born from a three-year "archaeological" decoding of Bernardo Bertolucci’s The Last Emperor, this innovative system reveals the logical structure underlying filmic expression.
The CINE-map is the analytical matrix capturing the intrinsic code of a masterpiece. Much like a symphonic score or a DNA sequence, it visualizes the mathematical correspondence between structural form and cinematic rhythm. It reveals a radical truth: Originality is not in the "What," but in the "How"—the unique, irreproducible logical matrix that pre-determines the beauty of the final frame.
CONTENTS & CHAPTER ABSTRACTS
Chapter 1. The Bazin Inquiry: The Path to Essence. Returning to the meta-problem of "What is Cinema?" This chapter establishes the analytical path through cinema's structure, diagnosing the systemic disconnect between academic theory and creative practice.
Chapter 2. The 4-Circle Theory & The Director’s Mind Map: Finding the First Principle. Defining cinema through the "4-Circle Theory." This structural analysis derives the Director's Mind Map, in which the First Principle is identified: The Controlling Idea governs all decisions.
Chapter 3 . The Discipline of Directing: Executing the Logic. The director as the executor of the Controlling Idea. Using the Logic Compass to eliminate noise and ensure every on-set decision aligns with the First Principle.
Chapter 4. The Shape of Logic: The CINE-map. Logic has a shape. To see the beauty within the matrix is to see the soul of the film. This chapter deconstructs the systemic creation of Bertolucci’s The Last Emperor, revealing the CINE-map as the Symphonic Score of Cinema.
CHAPTER 5. Case Studies: Decoding The Masterpieces. If the CINE-map is the "Identity Card" of a film, then reverse engineering the masters provides the ultimate validation of this logic.
