Every autumn, farmers in northern Kazakhstan burn tens of thousands of tonnes of straw left after the flaxseed harvest. This book shows how to turn that waste into a profitable business.
It is based on a real engineering feasibility study for a €32 million project in Kokshetau. One site combines three plants: a biomass power and heat plant, a solar plant and a flax-fibre line making cottonized fibre. Together they earn a 14.5% return. The chance of losing money falls to 0.3%, against 17% for a fibre plant on its own. Carbon credits add about €1.2 million a year.
The book also tests the concept in Europe and the USA. It ends with a ten-step playbook for developers, investors and engineers looking at agricultural-waste projects.
