A Software Engineer's Commentary on The Effective Executive
A Software Engineer's Commentary on The Effective Executive
About the Book
Peter Drucker coined the term 'Knowledge Worker'. Then later in his seminal work on management he defined being an executive like this: "A Knowledge worker, who, by virtue of their position or knowledge, is responsible for a contribution that materially affects the capacity of the organization to perform and obtain results." Every software developer working on a critical project, or on some modernization impacts the organization's ability to achieve results. Perhaps not as much as the CIO. But today, much of our work is now knowledge work. Thus every Knowledge Worker ought to be aware of and practice Drucker's principles of effectiveness, and even more so those who lead them.
This commentary emerges from my deep study of the work, and the connections from its principles to other, more recent, works in other fields. It will explore step-by-step Drucker's work, and its application to software engineering, and agile transformations.
