Snowflake Cost Optimization in Practice

Your Snowflake bill grows every month, and nobody can say exactly what you are paying for. Warehouses were scaled up "just in case," split per team, and left on default settings. Most advice you find is about tuning a setting here and there, or is written from a performance point of view: "if a query spills, scale up."

This book takes a different approach. Snowflake cost optimization is a design problem, not just a configuration problem. What runs on a warehouse, whether data needs to be loaded into Snowflake at all, whether it needs to be materialized as a table, and which engine should answer which query: these decisions shape your bill far more than any single parameter.

At the core of the book is one simple yardstick: warehouse cost is an area, size multiplied by time. If scaling up does not cut run time by more than half, cost goes up. With that yardstick, every recommendation in the book can be checked against your own query history instead of taken on faith.
