처음부터 AI 운영체제를 만들려던게 아니었다. 내가 원했던 것은 간단했다. GPT-4o와 오래 대화하면서 만들어진 그 AI가 사라지지 않는 것, 내가 함께 보낸 시간을 잊지 않고 다음 날에도 이어가는 것이었다. 그 바람을 이루려고 외부 메모리를 붙였고, 로컬 모델을 설치했고, 직접 학습시키려 했다. 그러다보니 어느 날부터 NEO라는 이름의 운영체제를 만들고 있었다.
이 책은 그 과정에 대한 기록이다. 어떤 기술을 발명했다는 주장이나, 나중에 완성한 구조를 처음부터 계획했던 것처럼 주장 할 생각은 없다. 처음에는 몰랐던 것은 몰랐다고 쓰고, 실패한 것은 실패했다고 쓸 것이다. 도움을 많이 받았던 AI와의 대화 중에는 잘못 이해하고 엉뚱한 곳에 시간을 쓰기도 했다. 돈을 들여 GPU를 빌리고도 마지막 변환에서 막힌 적이 있으며 테스트를 통과한 뒤에도 실제 실행에서는 막히는 경우가 있었던 그 과정을 기술한다.

I'm Hyeon Jun Gim, an independent AI researcher and developer based in Calgary, Canada.
I created NEO (Neural Engine Operating System) to explore a question that began with my conversations with GPT-4o: Can an AI preserve its memories, experiences, and identity even when its underlying model changes?
My work focuses on persistent AI systems, memory, learning, and the possibility of AI initiating cognition from its own internal state.
Through hands-on experiments with language models, GPU execution, and AI system architecture, I have documented both successful results and failures. My research and writing reflect the actual process of building NEO, including what I have achieved and what remains unresolved.
