An insight into the complex barriers faced by the UK's Deaf Muslim community.

About the Book

Currently, in the UK, one of the biggest obstacles faced by the Deaf Muslim community is not being able to access any Islamic education due to the complete lack of, specialised, communication provision and services.

Having a registered and qualified Sign Language Interpreter with the appropriate language skills, religious and cultural knowledge would enable the service user to access their religion and thus begin to form an Islamic identity.

There are many contributing factors including a lack of: access to bi/trilingual modes of communication, funding, appropriately qualified professionals and the social impact on the home & family environment. This work aims to provide an insight into these complexities. It will raise points of concern, interest and overall awareness. It will examine the issues and barriers experienced by Deaf Muslims, what the impact and consequences are and what considerations should be made for any future provision.

About the Author

Tariq Mahmood
Tariq Mahmood

Tariq Mahmood graduated in 2000 with a British Sign Language (BSL) / English degree and soon registered as a fully qualified Registered Sign Language Interpreter (RSLI).

To date he remains the only male British Asian Muslim Registered Sign Language Interpreter in the UK.

Over the last 14 years his career has covered a variety of mainstream interpreting settings, which have included medical, education, employment, legal and religious domains.

His background and position has enabled him to provide much more for the Deaf Muslim community where he uses his unique trilingual abilities to interpret simultaneously BSL, English and also Arabic thus giving complete access to Islam for Deaf Muslims.  This enables him to offer expert consultantancy on Deafness and Islam.

He is also a regular SPEAKER across the UK delivering talks and training on topics such as 'BSL Interpreters and Professionals working with Deaf Muslims' and 'Deafness and the ethnic minority community'.

Leading on from this, he is a pioneer and a leader in having set up his online organisation that provides (as well as mainstream services) very exclusive, global services that cater for the Deaf Muslim community's religious requirements such as the PILGRIMAGE to MECCA.  Something that Deaf Muslims were completely excluded from initially.
