About the Book

What if the machinery running modern advertising were finally made clear?

Every day, decisions about which ad reaches which person are made billions of times, in fractions of a second, by systems most people never see. If you've ever wanted to understand how that machinery actually works — without a computer science degree or a decade in the industry — this book is your starting point.

The Evolution of AdTech is a beginner's guide to digital advertising that starts at the very beginning: the ancient human impulse to connect a message with the right person, and how that single idea evolved from painted walls and town criers into the auctions, algorithms, and artificial intelligence of today.

Rather than drowning you in jargon, the book teaches through a story. You'll follow Kowalski Vintage Cycles — a family bicycle shop with fifty-six years of craft and a very modern problem: it's invisible on page two of the search results while a big-box chain sells imitations of its work. As the shop learns to compete, you'll learn the machinery alongside it, one campaign at a time.

By the end of this book, you'll understand:

  • How a 100-millisecond auction decides every ad you see
  • How a click becomes a customer — and where leads leak away
  • How location, budgets, and bids quietly steer campaigns
  • How pixels and tracking actually measure what's working
  • What AI really changes in advertising — and the judgment it can't replace

This book is for you if you are:

  • A newcomer curious how digital advertising works beneath the surface
  • A marketer or business owner who wants to understand the tools you use
  • A product manager, engineer, or professional stepping into the AdTech world
  • Anyone who's ever wondered who put that ad there, and why

Written in plain language that decodes the jargon as it goes, with clear diagrams and no assumed technical background, The Evolution of AdTech is clear enough for your first campaign and useful long after it.

The problem is ancient. Only the machinery is new. This book is about how the machinery works today.

About the Author

Vimal Girish

I'm a Software Engineer with more than twenty-five years of experience in enterprise and platform engineering, the past decade of which has been spent building the systems this book is about, currently leading a team of engineers. For the past decade I've led the architecture, design, and development of large-scale Digital Media advertising platforms — working across the full machinery of modern AdTech: real-time bidding pipelines, bid-optimization and budget-pacing frameworks, campaign and audience-targeting systems, and integrations with ecosystems like Google Ads and Microsoft Advertising. More recently my work has moved into AI-driven advertising, from generative AI for creative automation to natural-language campaign configuration and automated performance insights.

Over my career I've gone from enterprise application engineering to leading engineering teams that deliver commercial AdTech products end to end — from architecture through production. I hold a master's in Information Technology and a bachelor's in Electrical, Electronics and Communications Engineering.

I wrote this book to give newcomers the clear, structured understanding of digital advertising I wish I'd had when I was starting out. If that's you, I hope it helps.
