Malaysia’s Semiconductor AI Transformation

Malaysia handles about one in eight of the world's chips.

Almost half of everything the country exports is electrical and electronic. And Malaysia's listed semiconductor companies are worth under 2% of its own stock market.

Huge volume. Modest value.

That's not about doing anything wrong. It's about where in the chain you sit. Designing a chip captures half the industry's value. Assembling and testing it — what Malaysia is world-class at — captures six per cent.

Moving up is two climbs, not one. Up in size, and up in value — from making what a drawing says, to doing the engineering, to owning the product. A company can grow to a thousand people and stay completely replaceable.

And it's already been done here. Four Penang companies were each worth under RM100 million a decade ago. They build their own test equipment now. Combined value: roughly RM26 billion — approaching the entire assembly-and-test sector they grew up supplying.

What AI adds. These companies have the machines, the certifications, the customers. What they've never had enough of is engineering attention — the hours to work out why a yield moved, to quote a hard job properly, to document a process well enough to win better work.

That's what changed. AI fills the layer between software and people, where judgement lives. Less a tool, more additional cognitive workforce. And it helps the smaller company most, because it adds something that was never there at all.
