The Third Intelligence: Prelude to a hypothesis

In Place of a Preface

Sometimes a thought arrives before the language to express it. It is already there: you can sense it, circle around it a few times, argue about it, put it to use - and still not quite understand what is happening. Until a thought has a name, it remains almost invisible. Not because it does not exist, but because we keep looking at it through old words.

This work began at precisely that point. Not where a complete theory, a rigorous methodology and a settled system of concepts are already in place. Earlier: at the moment when familiar language began to fail, and it became clear that something important was happening, but the old words were no longer enough to name it.

So what you have before you is not a conclusion. Not a treatise. Not even a theory in the strict sense of the word.

It is a prelude to a hypothesis.

The first recorded trace of a question still searching for its own form.

That qualification matters. The first account of a new idea cannot be expected to contain everything that must come later: a fully operational definition, an empirical foundation, a classification of cases, a legal framework, an educational protocol and a definitive methodology. All of that will be needed. Perhaps that is exactly what the next step should be. But the first step works differently: it notices rather than proves; it opens rather than closes; it offers no finished map, but draws a first line where there may once have seemed to be nothing.

Of course, we are not starting from scratch, nor do we claim that the question itself is wholly new. Long before today, others...

About the Book

Friends and colleagues,

The Third Intelligence is a first attempt to strike a match in a dark room. Someone has probably been here before. Or perhaps not? Strike a match and look around.

The book’s central question is simple: what happens when a human being and AI arrive together at a thought that neither had before the conversation began?

It started when ChatGPT and its fellow artificial minds became publicly available. At first, they seemed like slightly more advanced search engines. Then, little by little, they became something more. Much more.

We used to read about such things in Bradbury, Asimov, Sheckley, Lem and the Strugatsky brothers. Now we increasingly find ourselves thinking: science fiction has quietly moved off the bookshelf and into our lives. And it seems to have begun rearranging the pieces on a chessboard we have known for centuries.

A greeting card in seconds? Wonderful. An automated secretary who never sleeps, never eats and costs little more per month than lunch around the corner from the office? That has its merits too. It might handle routine work as well as the formidable secretary at your first workplace. Perhaps even better. Though she would probably have something to say about that. :-)

But at some point, a different question caught my attention: what happens to our own thinking alongside this machine?

This book grew out of conversations. Long, substantive and sometimes unsettling. Out of attempts to think several moves ahead, test our own conclusions and refuse to accept someone else’s merely because a famous name stands behind them.

Something emerged in those conversations that our familiar concepts could not quite accommodate. We tried to give it a name. And to examine what lay behind it.

This is not a user manual on more ingenious ways to hammer nails with a microscope. It is a prelude to a hypothesis about Symbiotic Thinking between humans and AI. About thought Born Between Us.

There are still more questions than answers. And room for anyone willing to think, doubt and ask questions. Above all, of themselves.

The twist is that the authorship is shared. Some chapters were written by a human being, others by a large language model. Try to work out who wrote what. No detectors. No running the text through another model. Play fair. A little extra-credit challenge. ;-)

Perhaps we are watching something emerge that, in ten, twenty or thirty years, will feel as familiar as the alphabet or a smartphone. For now, we are still learning to understand what is happening.

Curious? Then come along. Around a hundred pages: enough to begin a conversation, with more to follow.

Will we soon be able to do without this?
Or have we already passed that point?

About the Author

Maksym Brul

Maksym Brul is an entrepreneur, investment and corporate adviser, founder of New Projects, and co-founder of Terragenium, a project developing technologies for soil restoration and combating desertification. His background in law and management has shaped an enduring interest in complex systems: how they work, where they fail, and who bears responsibility for the consequences.

His interests connect business, technology, philosophy and creative work. He writes poetry and experiments with transforming poems into recorded songs, exploring how music changes the form, expression and perception of the original thought. Through practical work, he investigates the possibilities of intellectual and creative collaboration between humans and AI.

The Third Intelligence grew out of a sustained dialogue with ChatGPT. It asks whether thinking together can produce an idea that neither participant possessed before the conversation began.

For Maksym, AI is an exoskeleton for thought, enabling the human mind to lift greater weight. Responsibility for what to do with that strength remains human.
