The Life of an Idea

A field guide to how ideas become value

Every idea begins as a spark in someone's head. The lucky ones make it out into the world and become something people are glad of - a product, a book, a business, a better way of doing things. Many don't. And it's almost never because they were bad ideas. It's what happens to them on the way.

This is a short, warm field guide to that journey in the workplace - how an idea moves, changes shape, and turns into something of worth, and where, so often, it sometimes doesn't in work.

It's about learning to see that middle stretch, the part almost nobody can watch while they're standing in it, and knowing where a small nudge would carry a good idea a remarkably long way.

It is, on purpose, not a framework to roll out or a system to install or a productivity guide - it is a way of looking, seeing and noticing.

No diagrams to memorise, no homework, no jargon. Just twenty-six chapters - each one a single principle, a story, and something you can actually use - that add up to a clearer way of seeing your own work. You can read it on a train in an afternoon, and keep it in a coat pocket for years.

You'll recognise this

You have watched it happen. A good idea in the room on Monday. A team who cared. The unmistakable feeling that something might really come of it.

And then the long, curious, sometimes bumpy, middle – where the interesting decisions get made, the communication carries the meaning and the real character of the work reveals itself. Some ideas make it all the way through. Others don't. Rarely because they were bad ideas.

The messy middle is where nearly all of working life happens. It's also where nearly all of the potential lives – waiting to be seen.

That's what this guide is for. Not to remove the mess – you can't, the mess is where the people are – but to help you see through it clearly enough to help more of the good, valuable, stuff arrive.

What you'll begin to see

  • The shape of the journey every idea takes – from a private noticing to a public thing of value in work
  • The two kinds of seeing folded inside every idea – noticing what's there, and seeing what it could become
  • Why the messy middle is where most of the potential lives, and how to walk it with more confidence
  • 26 lenses to look at how ideas move through to value, and how to improve being part of the work that gets it there
  • The balance between business results and cultivating better workplaces
  • How to protect the three things you actually spend on every idea: time, energy and attention
  • Why the people doing the work are the whole point – and what that changes about how to help
  • The five landmarks that carefully organise everything seen – the Map, the Physics, the Wiring, the Engine, the Flywheel – introduced as tools of seeing, not a system to install

What's inside:

  • Twenty-six short principles, across five plain-English layers — orientation, flow, communication, creativity, and the habits that compound.
  • Written to be read, not studied. Warm, wry, human, with a story on every page.
  • One idea at its heart, borrowed from the Japanese — mottainai: a quiet respect for the worth of things, and for the finite time, energy and attention we pour into them.

It's for anyone doing good work who wishes more of it landed - whether you're leading a team, building something as a small group or simply tired of watching good ideas stall for reasons nobody can quite name.

Take the good ideas your business already has, and get more of them where they were meant to go.
