Reach, Force, and Change: A New Framework for Understanding Chess
(For readers who want the essence)
The entire framework reduces to one idea: chess is a system of reachable relations undergoing change. Everything begins with Reach: what can relate to what? Then comes Occupancy: who or what is actually there? Reach interacting with Occupancy creates Function — a real role in this position, not just an abstract capability — and from that role comes Force: the way the relation acts.
Push · Pull · Redirect · Release · Tension · Block
These are not six kinds of moves. They are six ways of describing what is happening in a position. Tense tells us whether a force is acting now or belongs to a possible future. The interaction of forces produces a Resultant: what the position's forces actually produce. That produces Change: what is different afterward. The new position creates new reaches, and the cycle begins again.
REACH → OCCUPANCY → FORCE → TENSE → RESULTANT → CHANGE → REACH
Above this mechanical cycle is Purpose, which answers: what change am I trying to obtain?
Reach
What can relate?
Occupancy
Who/what is there?
Force
How does the relation act?
Tense
When does it matter?
Resultant
What does the interaction produce?
Change
What is different afterward?
Purpose
Which possible change do I want?
This is the backbone of the entire book. Everything else — attacks, threats, captures, checks, forks, pins, skewers, discovered attacks, deflections, overloads, sacrifices, and strategic plans — can be understood as higher-level configurations of these underlying relations. The framework is not meant to replace chess terminology. It is meant to expose the common structure underneath it.

About the Book
I'm not a titled player. So if you're looking for an experienced/titled player's perspective, then no — that's not what I'm presenting here. I'm simply sharing my own way of looking at chess and seeing whether anyone else finds it useful.
Reach, Force, and Change: A New Framework for Understanding Chess
What if chess positions could be understood not primarily as collections of moves and tactical motifs, but as systems of reachable relations undergoing change?
The Forces of Chess develops a framework built around six fundamental questions:
Where can it act?
What is there?
How does the relation act?
Is it active now, or only conditionally?
What does the interaction produce?
What is different afterward?
These questions form the book's central architecture:
REACH → OCCUPANCY → FORCE → TENSE → RESULTANT → CHANGE → REACH
The framework introduces six force descriptions — Push, Pull, Redirect, Release, Tension, and Block — and uses them to reinterpret familiar chess phenomena such as forks, pins, skewers, discovered attacks, deflections, overloads, and interpositions.
The aim is not to replace traditional chess terminology. It is to look underneath it.
A fork, for example, is not treated as an isolated pattern to memorize, but as a configuration in which one changed reach produces multiple actionable consequences. A discovered attack becomes a Release: an existing force becomes active when its obstruction disappears. A deflection becomes Redirect. An overload becomes Tension.
The same framework is then extended to calculation: rather than treating calculation as a separate mental operation, the player projects the current force-state through possible changes and repeatedly examines the resulting position.
Current state → candidate change → projected state → new forces → new change
The result is an attempt to describe chess from the inside out: not merely what move is available, but what can reach what, what is acting, what resists, what changes, and what that change makes possible next.
