What happens when we stop looking at reading and chess as separate skills, and instead look at the underlying process they share?
Forces of Reading and Chess develops a framework for understanding how we build internal models, connect what we know, infer what is hidden, predict what comes next, and update our understanding when something changes.
In reading, we move from words to relations, from relations to a model, and from that model toward inference and prediction:
WORDS → RELATIONS → MODEL → INFERENCE → PREDICTION → UPDATE
In chess, the same architecture appears in a different form. We begin with what can reach what, examine what is actually present, identify constraints and forces, simulate changes, and observe what the new position makes possible:
REACH → OCCUPANCY → CONSTRAINT → FORCE → TENSE → RESULTANT → CHANGE → REACH
The book develops this idea through two connected domains.
The first part explores reading as an active process of model construction. Words activate knowledge. Relations connect pieces of information. Models represent scenes, states, sequences, and processes. When something is missing or unclear, the mind can infer what is hidden, project what may happen next, and revise its model when new information arrives.
The second part applies a related way of thinking to chess. Rather than treating calculation primarily as a search through move names, it examines the changing relations between pieces: reach, occupancy, constraints, force, tension, interaction, and resultant change.
The central practical question becomes:
What can reach what, what is there, what is stopping it, what can the relation do, and what will actually be different afterward?
The framework is not presented as a replacement for established theories of reading, cognition, or chess. It is a functional model — an attempt to describe the common structure of two activities that seem very different on the surface but both require us to build models and project change.
