About the Book

Some students meet a teacher who walks them into their art and lets them go. Others meet a teacher who keeps them at the entrance, copying, until the thing that brought them there goes quiet. This book is about the difference.

Art is the place where two things meet — a fire, which is given, and a hand, which is earned. The fire is why you came. The hand is what must be built, and there is only one way to build it. Everything turns on whether the student is ever released into work of their own — and on who decides when that work begins.

Then I look through fire and hand at five stories from my own life: an art school, a computer school, aikido, a partner dance, and a musical instrument. I am the student in all of them, never the master. In some of them the fire got through. In the first one, it was killed.

This book cannot give a quenched fire back. What it can do is describe, as exactly as I am able, how the fire gets through and how it gets killed — so that you recognize the moment when it matters. Before it happens, if this reaches you in time. Or years after, if you have long since decided that the quiet was your own fault.

It is a map of wrong turns, drawn by someone who took most of them.
