About the Book

Take a Day Off

A reflective, quietly playful book about work, life, and paying attention

Take a Day Off is not a productivity guide, a leadership manual, or a manifesto about escaping to the woods.

It's a creative reflection on modern working life - told through short stories, poems and visual posters - for people who are as interested in how they live inside their work as what they do within it.

The tone moves between humour and discomfort, familiarity and pause.

The writing is observational rather than instructional.

The visuals carry feeling more than explanation.

Many readers find themselves recognising fragments of their own working lives - and in doing so, noticing questions they hadn't previously given space.

The book

Each chapter pairs written reflection with two visual pieces - one deliberate and designed, the other raw and photographic - creating a rhythm that invites browsing as much as reading.

It is a book intended to be dipped into, returned to, and left open rather than completed in a single sitting.

Read it on a tablet.

Save it to return to.

Leave it open in a tab for the week.

Where this comes from

The book grew from a desire to explore working life without turning every tension into optimisation or advice.

The book does not promise transformation.

It offers a moment of attention.

Sometimes, that is sufficient.

Rob Lambert

Rob Lambert runs Cultivated, a publishing-led practice for people who know work could be better — and are willing to do something about it. Talks, writing, teaching and consulting on how ideas become value inside organisations.

Rob is trained in Media Science, the empirical study of how messages move, distort, and fragment as they travel. He spent his early working years chasing stories for films, newspapers and publishing. He then spent twenty + years helping companies turn their great ideas into valuable outcomes, and cultivate enriching places to work too, including growing a startup from to a £400m + exit.

He has held VP Engineering and VP HR roles — a rare pairing that shapes how he thinks about both delivery and people. At his heart though, Rob is a creative and storyteller.

He writes at cultivatedmanagement.com, makes films at Creative Soul Projects, and co-hosts the Stationery Freaks podcast. Based in Winchester, works internationally.
