About the Book

This is a book that balances accessibility for general readers with cutting-edge academic rigor, targeting technical practitioners, business managers, sociological researchers, government policymakers, and ordinary readers interested in the relationship between AI and society. It is neither a purely technical manual nor a vague sociological treatise, but the first cross-disciplinary work to systematically elaborate how Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) has fundamentally reshaped human cognition, analysis, and governance of the digital society.

It opened by addressing the paradox of the digital age: humanity possesses the largest volume of social data in history, yet has fallen into an unprecedented state of social blindness. Traditional social computing suffers from three fatal methodological limitations: statistical lags that cause decisions to miss the optimal window, shallow semantic understanding that fails to grasp irony and subcultural jargon, and lack of verifiability that renders conclusions scientifically unfounded. Meanwhile, large language models (LLMs), despite their formidable linguistic capabilities, have fallen into the trap of AI hallucinations due to flaws such as contextual absence, cultural desensitization, positional drift, and atomized reading—they can write poetry, yet fail to comprehend the true sentiment of a single Weibo post. This fundamental contradiction—that linguistic competence does not equate to social understanding—reveals that simply scaling up model size is not the solution for AI to comprehend society, and technological evolution needs to take a different path.

At its core, RAG allows AI to retrieve information before generating responses, fundamentally solving the timeliness and credibility problems of large language models by separating knowledge acquisition from knowledge expression. Social RAG, as a specialized variant of RAG in the field of social understanding, represents the perfect marriage between AI and social computing. Rather than simply retrieving facts, Social RAG enables deep retrieval of social context across four dimensions—time, space, social relationships, and event causality—upgrading AI from a fact-answering machine to a social understanding engine.

In terms of technical architecture, Social RAG adds a social data indexing layer, a context-aware retrieval layer, and a social reasoning generation layer on top of general-purpose RAG, building four core capabilities: semantic understanding, relationship modeling, dynamic tracking, and explainable reasoning. It can penetrate the surface of language to grasp underlying value judgments, identify opinion leaders and communication paths in social networks, track the complete evolutionary cycle of social events, and output transparent, verifiable, and traceable reasoning chains, achieving a paradigm shift from computational society to understanding society.

Subsequently, the book dissected in detail the complete technical pipeline through which Social RAG "thinks" about society, and uses the gaming industry—a high-density microcosm of digital society—as a case study to comprehensively demonstrate how Social RAG has restructured the underlying logic of the industry. Building on this, it further proposes that Social RAG is redefining entertainment computing, providing entirely new methodological tools for game culture research, player behavior studies, game education applications, and ethical research on games.

The appendix systematically compile core technical terms of Social RAG, major global research institutions, open-source tools, and references, providing comprehensive guidance for readers to engage in in-depth practice. It also outlines the author's future writing plans, which will further explore the ethical challenges facing Social RAG—such as data privacy, algorithmic bias, information cocoons, and power restructuring—as well as the next-generation technological evolution driven by multimodality and federated learning, ultimately pointing to the ultimate vision of human-machine collaboration to build a better digital society.

The core value of this book lie in the fact that it not only reveals the technical path for AI to comprehend society, but also provokes profound reflections on the relationship between technology and humanity: the ultimate mission of Social RAG is not to replace humans in understanding society, but to enhance human cognitive abilities, enabling humans to see each other more clearly and understand themselves better in the age of information explosion.
