Built for deeper conversations about the source

A Study in Scarlet presents a particularly demanding reasoning environment.

Statements can come from a narrator, a character, an observed event, a recollection, an explanation offered after the fact, or an inference made from incomplete information. Relationships among events may depend on chronology, perspective, evidence, and what individual characters know at particular points in the story.

Finding a relevant passage is only part of the task.

A sustained AI conversation may also require distinguishing:

  • what the text directly establishes
  • what a character claims
  • what is observed
  • what is inferred
  • which events are actually connected
  • what particular characters know at a given point
  • when later information changes our understanding of earlier events

The AI Source Companion provides additional structure for working with those distinctions.

What the Companion includes

AI Reasoning Instructions

A dedicated reasoning layer for guiding how the AI handles source material, analytical records, inference, uncertainty, competing interpretations, outside information, and unsupported conclusions.

The compressed instructions begin on page 5, with the complete uncompressed instructions included as the canonical reference.

72 Source Snapshot Records

Structured analytical records preserving bounded analyses of selected features of the novel, including:

  • observation and inference
  • statements, claims, and evidentiary support
  • character relationships
  • investigative developments
  • narrative perspective
  • chronology and retrospective explanation
  • character knowledge
  • clues and supported relationships
  • competing explanations
  • unresolved questions
  • relationships between earlier events and later disclosures
  • broad and detailed views of narrative structure

These are not chapter summaries or simplified retellings.

Each Source Snapshot Record preserves a defined analytical structure tied to identified source material and a stated analytical boundary.

Complete Public-Domain Source Text

The complete text of Arthur Conan Doyle’s A Study in Scarlet is included and formatted for AI reference and analysis.

Text source: Project Gutenberg, eBook #244.

The novel remains the primary source. The Companion provides analytical support for working with it.

Why sustained AI conversations are different

A single question about a novel can often be answered by locating a relevant passage.

Longer conversations introduce additional problems.

An inference made earlier in the discussion can gradually begin to resemble an established fact. A character’s statement can be treated as though the narrative confirmed it. Events appearing near one another can acquire an unsupported relationship. Information revealed later can migrate backward and alter descriptions of what was actually known earlier.

The Companion is designed to make those distinctions easier to preserve.

Its AI Reasoning Instructions distinguish among the primary source, Source Snapshot Records, current reasoning, character statements, inference, uncertainty, newly introduced information, and unsupported extensions.

Its Source Snapshot Records preserve selected analytical findings within documented boundaries so they can be examined without silently expanding what they establish.

Designed for narrative evidence

A Study in Scarlet repeatedly separates what is seen, what is said, what is inferred, and what is eventually explained.

Those categories are not interchangeable.

A character may make a statement without the narrative establishing that it is true.

An observation may support several interpretations.

An inference may later receive additional support, remain uncertain, or be displaced by new information.

A later explanation may clarify earlier events without changing what was actually available to a character or reader at the earlier point in the narrative.

The Companion helps preserve those distinctions while still allowing the AI to interpret, compare, question, and analyze the novel.

You can explore questions such as:

• What does the text actually establish at this point?

• Who knows this information?

• Is this an observation, a claim, an inference, or a later explanation?

• What evidence supports the connection?

• Was this relationship established at the time or understood only later?

• How far does the available evidence support the conclusion?

Chronology, perspective, and character knowledge

Narrative order and event order are not always identical.

A Study in Scarlet changes perspective and moves between different periods and bodies of information. Later material supplies context for events presented earlier, while individual characters possess different amounts of information at different times.

The Companion helps maintain distinctions among:

event chronology • narrative presentation • character knowledge • later interpretation

This allows the story to be examined without flattening its gradual process of discovery into a retrospective account in which everything appears to have been known from the beginning.

Observation is not inference

The Sherlock Holmes stories are strongly associated with reasoning from evidence, which makes careful analytical distinctions especially important.

An observed detail is not automatically the conclusion drawn from it.

Two observations do not establish a relationship merely because they appear together.

A plausible explanation is not the same as a demonstrated explanation.

A character’s confidence does not itself establish that the character is correct.

The Companion preserves distinctions among observation, statement, inference, proposed relationship, and supported conclusion.

It does not prevent interpretation.

It gives interpretation a clearer source-based foundation.

Multiple analytical resolutions

The 72 Source Snapshot Records operate at different analytical resolutions.

Some examine broad narrative or investigative structures. Others focus on smaller groups of observations, statements, relationships, or events.

This allows the AI to move between questions about the overall investigation and questions about an individual passage, clue, interaction, or sequence without automatically collapsing one level of analysis into another.

How to use the Companion

Upload this PDF to a document-capable AI, AI project, or AI workspace.

Apply the Compressed AI Reasoning Instructions on page 5 to the system’s instruction field when available.

Then begin asking questions normally.

The Companion can remain available while you examine characters, trace clues and inferences, compare statements with later evidence, investigate chronology, test interpretations, distinguish character knowledge from reader knowledge, analyze narrative perspective, or conduct extended source-based conversations.

An optional setup check is included in the publication.

What this publication is — and what it is not

The Sherlock Holmes: A Study in Scarlet — AI Reasoning Companion is a working implementation of the AI Source Analysis Framework.

It is designed to make source boundaries, evidentiary standing, relationships, chronology, uncertainty, and limits on conclusions more explicit during AI-assisted work.

It does not guarantee accuracy, eliminate hallucinations, certify AI output, or establish one authoritative interpretation of the novel.

The Source Snapshot Records are bounded analytical references.

The novel remains the primary evidence.

The underlying proposition is straightforward:

Analytical information about consequential source material can be prepared in advance, preserved as structured records, and supplied to an AI conversation alongside the original evidence.

I create and sell AI REASONING COMPANIONS. WHY? Source material written for people leaves readers to understand how things connect, where they stop, and what’s uncertain. AI can’t do that reliably — those distinctions need to be made explicit. —Greg
