Hibernate, JDBC, Liquibase, Type Mismatches, and the Production Traps Generic Tutorials Miss

About the Book
Your Java application connects to PostgreSQL and the easy queries work. Then a varchar column meets a Long parameter, a null filter fails with "could not determine data type of parameter", a native IN query breaks on an empty list, or a Liquibase precondition records a change that never ran.
This field guide shows Java and Spring teams how to diagnose those failures from the PostgreSQL error outward (column type, JDBC binding, Java type, Hibernate mapping, Liquibase history) and which fixes are safe. It is for teams moving an existing application from MySQL, Oracle, SQL Server, or another database. It is not a PostgreSQL introduction or a Hibernate reference.
The JDBC and Liquibase examples were smoke-tested on PostgreSQL 18.4 and 16.15 with pgJDBC 42.7.13 and Liquibase 5.0.4, and the book tells you the SQLSTATE to expect. Some results surprise most teams: a typed setNull(..., TIMESTAMP_WITH_TIMEZONE) still fails in a "? is null or col >= ?" filter with pgJDBC; setBoolean into a legacy flag column either fails or silently stores the word "true", depending on column width; a Liquibase MARK_RAN guard that checks only an index name can permanently skip a migration; and an easy-to-write CASE x ... WHEN NULL backfill branch can never match null. The book shows the fixes that work.
Included: worked debugging examples, five field notes on recurring migration patterns, a one-page readiness checklist, and a symptom-to-first-safe-move table. Hibernate guidance is based on the Hibernate ORM 6.6 documentation and is marked as such. All examples are synthetic; no client, employer, or proprietary material is used.

How this book was made: it is based on the author's own Java-to-PostgreSQL migration project experience. The text was drafted and edited with AI tools, and the JDBC and Liquibase examples were verified by running them.
