OTLP on the Wire teaches engineers to read the OpenTelemetry Protocol byte by byte.
Most OpenTelemetry material stops at SDK instrumentation and Collector configuration. This book goes one layer lower: it takes real OTLP trace, metric, and log payloads and decodes them from raw bytes through Protobuf records, OTLP schema, gRPC framing, HTTP transport, packet captures, failure modes, and telemetry cost.
The book is built around reproducible specimens: deterministic fixtures, deliberately broken payloads, packet captures, parsers, tests, and benchmark scripts.
