It's 1021 AD and much of Europe is secretly controlled by the Council, an ancient organization of powerful supernatural beings. A renegade is searching for surviving technology from a civilization that fell in the distant past. The Council has sent a Hunting party to stop him.

Aurelian of Arles, a renowned Hunter, is an ancient and immensely powerful warrior. He is accompanied by Eirleida, a Seeker who can find a discarded pin on the other side of the world. And now they've added Leontios of Miletus, a Maker, and as close to an expert in ancient technology as can be found. Backed by an organization that makes kings kneel, these three have set out to catch the renegade.

The man they Hunt is so weak he is nearly mortal. It should be an easy catch, yet it's anything but. Every time they think they have him cornered, the tables are turned and he slips away. As defeat after humiliating defeat piles up, they start to notice a pattern. He chooses when they meet. He chooses the ground. Despite his apparent weakness, he is constantly maneuvering the Hunters so that he is the one who acts, and they are forced to react. They may be the Hunters, but he controls the Hunt.

The chase was supposed to end in Iberia, but it carries the Hunters far from familiar territory. Over land and sea, they Hunt the renegade across medieval Europe. The farther they get from the Mediterranean, the less access they have to Council resources and influence. Eventually, a dangerous crossing puts them in an unfamiliar land facing cutting winds, vast stretches of emptiness, and fantastic monsters they'd previously only believed were fairy tales. All the while, the renegade seems just beyond reach.

Their quarry is on the trail of technology from the world that came before. They don't know how he intends to find it, what it can do, why he wants it, or even what it looks like. The only thing they're sure of is that they can't let him have it.

The longer the Hunt continues, the less certain the party becomes of what they used to take for granted. Strength fails them, Council power fails them, and their quarry repeatedly behaves like the one doing the hunting.

Far from the Council's reach, with their quarry closing in on the ancient technology he seeks while still maneuvering them at every turn, Aurelian and his party face one simple question:

How do you stop someone who cannot be caught?
