Off the Handshake: The MCP 2026-07-28 Migration Playbook

Move Model Context Protocol servers and clients from the 2025-11-25 session model to the stateless revision: per-request metadata, multi round-trip requests, subscriptions, the Tasks extension, authorization hardening, dual-era compatibility, and the Python and TypeScript SDK v2 upgrades

Off the Handshake: The MCP 2026-07-28 Migration Playbook

MCP shipped a breaking revision on 28 July 2026 and every existing MCP book is now wrong on the wire. This playbook moves your servers and clients to the stateless model without breaking current clients: a complete method/header/error migration map, a seven-step dual-era rollout, multi round-trip requests, subscriptions, Tasks, authorization hardening, and the Python and TypeScript SDK v2 upgrades, with every message schema-validated and every Python example executed against mcp 2.3.0.

About the Book

On 28 July 2026 the Model Context Protocol shipped a breaking revision. The initialize handshake, sessions, the HTTP GET stream and server-initiated requests are gone; every request carries its own version and capabilities; servers ask for input inside results; Tasks moved to an extension; Roots, Sampling, Logging and Dynamic Client Registration are deprecated on a twelve-month clock. Every existing MCP book is now wrong on the wire.

This playbook takes backend and platform engineers from "we run a stateful MCP server with sessions" to a dual-era deployment and then to modern-only, without breaking the clients you already have. It gives you an inventory method and a standard-library era probe, a complete migration map of every method, header, _meta key, error code and capability, the transport rules verified against a real listener, multi round-trip requests with a requestState you can trust, subscriptions, Tasks, the authorization hardening, the Python mcp 2.x and TypeScript v2 upgrades, and a cutover plan with gateway and observability guidance.

What you get:

1. The complete before/after map, derived from the two official schemas: 31 methods, every result field, header, error code and capability, each with its SEP and verdict.

2. A dual-era strategy you can schedule: the compatibility matrix turned into a seven-step rollout, with the SDK knobs and the Inspector era setting.

3. Every wire message validated against the official JSON Schema; every Python example executed against mcp 2.3.0 in-process and over a real HTTP listener.

4. The hard parts done properly: sealed requestState for multi round-trip requests, state handles that survive hijacking attempts, subscriptions/listen fan-out across replicas, Tasks routing, RFC 9207 iss validation.

5. Ships with tools: a stdlib era probe, a header encoder implementing the Base64 sentinel rules, a requestState sealer, and a validator you can point at your own traffic.

Formats: PDF (about 111 pages) and EPUB. 16 chapters plus two appendices, about 28,000 words, 193 source footnotes. Edition 1.0, October 2026. Free updates to this edition.

AI-assistance disclosure: this book was written with AI assistance. An AI coding assistant drafted text and code under the author's direction, and every method, field, header and version claim was then verified against the official MCP specification and SDK sources (October 2026), every JSON-RPC message validated against the official JSON Schemas, and every Python example executed against mcp 2.3.0. Where a claim could not be verified the text says so, and the editing log lists each such case.
