Questo libro affronta in modo sintetico tutte le teorie della fisica contemporanea, dalla relatività (ristretta e generale) alla meccanica quantistica e alla teoria quantistica dei campi, passando per la fisica nucleare e quella delle particelle. In aggiunta, sono esposti i rudimenti di fisica dei plasmi, dello stato solido, dei semiconduttori e della teoria dei gruppi.

L’approccio di questo manuale è quello di affrontare direttamente il formalismo matematico e di presentare le equazioni principali di ogni teoria, spiegandone il significato e le conseguenze nonché le problematiche lasciate aperte.

Il filo logico che lega i differenti paragrafi è dato da un superamento delle vecchie teorie per rispondere alle nuove esigenze; nel frattempo, sarà dato risalto a due direttive principali nella fisica contemporanea: la tendenza verso l’unificazione delle teorie fisiche e il ruolo fondamentale dell’energia nelle equazioni alla base di ognuna di esse.
