About the Book

Liberal Arts English Education in China: Heuristics of a Way of Teaching is a practical and reflective guide for university English teachers interested in bringing the principles of classical liberal arts education into the language classroom.

Drawing on years of teaching experience in China and earlier experience in alternative educational settings, Christiaan Woehle explores how intellectual independence, curiosity, critical judgement, and reasoned inquiry can become part of everyday English teaching.

The book combines educational philosophy with practical classroom approaches, covering critical reading, intercultural communication, public speaking, Readers Theatre, academic English, and student-centred discussion.

Rather than presenting a rigid teaching methodology, the author offers a collection of heuristics: adaptable principles, observations, and classroom practices intended to help teachers develop their own approaches to teaching.

The book also reflects on the possibilities and limitations of applying liberal arts educational ideals within Chinese university classrooms, distinguishing between what has proved workable in practice and what remains an aspiration.

Written primarily for beginning and developing university English teachers, it invites readers to consider teaching not merely as language instruction, but as an opportunity to cultivate independent thought, intellectual engagement, and meaningful communication.
