Who Decides, and Who Gets Paid, When Agents Write the Code
Coding agents took the typing out of programming, and the profession is splitting into the shape of a K. This career book helps you work out which arm you're on, what it will cost you to stay there, and what to do about it this week.

About the Book
In 2005 Chad Fowler wrote My Job Went to India for programmers who were afraid their work was moving offshore. Twenty years later programmers are afraid again, and this time the typing itself is going to coding agents.
Obie Fernandez has spent more than thirty years writing software and running engineering teams. In 2026 he ran an engineering organization where autonomous agents went from writing a small share of the merged pull requests to nearly two thirds of them by August. His argument is that the split in the profession was always there and agents made it visible. For decades most programmers were paid to turn somebody else's decisions into code, and most managers were paid to relay those decisions to the programmers. He calls both of them meat proxies. Now that the hands are cheap, the profession is splitting into the shape of a K: grinding proxies working longer than ever, honest coasters meeting the bar and taking their evenings back, and deciders who choose what gets built and answer for how it turns out.
The book has 52 short chapters in seven parts. Each one tells a story, many of them from Obie's own career, including the times he got it wrong, and ends with something concrete to do this week. One part makes the strongest case for coasting that Obie could build, and one chapter scores his own predictions. Part 6 takes on the question most career books leave alone, which is who gets paid when the work gets cheaper.
