About the Book

Effective industrial control begins before the controller is selected and before any code is written. It begins with a clear understanding of the process, its physical behaviour, its operating constraints and the purpose of control.

This first volume develops that foundation through RP-01, a recurring industrial reference process comprising a jacketed vessel and a thermal-fluid circulation and heat-exchange skid. The example is used throughout the book to connect process physics, equipment capability, measurements and control decisions.

Readers will learn how to:

• distinguish controlled, manipulated and disturbance variables;

• identify process constraints and operating objectives;

• use material and energy balances to understand process behaviour;

• anticipate process response without unnecessary mathematical complexity;

• assess what pumps, valves, heat exchangers and instruments can actually deliver;

• establish clear, testable control intent;

• distinguish basic process control from protective functions; and

• identify the evidence required before automation or controller tuning begins.

Written for engineers, technicians, automation professionals and students, this concise volume provides a practical framework for turning process understanding into defensible control-system decisions.

About the Author

Petros Savvidis

Petros Savvidis, PhD, is a control and instrumentation engineer and senior R&D and technical project manager with more than 17 years of experience across European industry and academia. His work spans industrial control, system modelling and optimisation, instrumentation, condition monitoring, model-based systems engineering, embedded systems and the delivery of complex technical programmes.

He has developed control, monitoring and data-acquisition solutions for energy, maritime, nuclear, automotive and manufacturing applications. His experience includes leading the development of an integrated smart-grid controller, delivering industrial modelling and control projects, supporting the commissioning of experimental systems and providing advanced control training to engineering teams from major international organisations.

Petros currently leads European and national research and development projects at SKYLD Security and Defence Ltd. He has also held research and teaching positions covering industrial control, embedded systems, critical-infrastructure inspection, human-machine interfaces and equipment health monitoring.

He holds a PhD in Electronic and Electrical Engineering and an MSc with Distinction in Communications, Control and Signal Processing from the University of Strathclyde. His Industrial Control Engineering series draws on this combination of practical engineering, applied research and teaching experience to present control engineering as a structured, process-led discipline.
