Every Cognos report author has lost an afternoon to a report that previews clean and then fails on publish, a prompt page that renders blank with no error, a total that is silently wrong, or a native SQL query that runs fine in the database client and throws a code you have never seen the moment Cognos touches it. The tool says the report is valid. The database says the SQL is valid. The report still does not work.
The Cognos Cookbook is the field guide to that gap. It is not a tour of the product and it is not theory. It is 47 recipes, each one the specific trap, the exact error text behind it, and the fix that actually clears it. If a recipe is here, the failure is real and it was reproduced on a live Cognos Analytics 12.1.2 instance. In a few cases the honest answer turned out to be that the fix everyone repeats does not clear it on this version. Those recipes say so plainly and tell you what does.
Two halves. The core is backend-agnostic: prompts and prompt pages, filters and aggregation, suppression, crosstabs and conditional formatting, expressions for dates and strings and type conversion, rendering and export differences across HTML and PDF and Excel, and drill-through. The supplement is Cognos on a SQL pass-through, treated generically across SQL Server, PostgreSQL, Oracle, Db2 and Spark, with a dialect matrix that writes the same operation correctly for each of the five engines.
Every recipe ends with a Status line naming the grade of evidence it rests on, so you always know whether you are reading something we ran or something we read. 135 pages, PDF, plus an error-code index that names the layer that raised each code.
