Patterns We Don't See

Mathematics in Daily Life

Patterns We Don't See
This book is 100% completeLast updated on 2026-10-07

What if mathematics has been hiding in plain sight all along?

A snowflake, a flower, a melody, a crowded street, a city map, a social network, or even a recommendation on your phone — they may seem completely unrelated. But underneath them are patterns, structures, probabilities, and mathematical ideas that quietly shape the world around us.

Patterns We Don’t See is an accessible journey into the mathematics of everyday life. You won’t find pages of complicated formulas or a traditional textbook approach. Instead, you’ll discover why certain shapes appear in nature, how music is connected to mathematics, why coincidences feel so surprising, how cities and social networks can be understood as mathematical systems, and how algorithms and artificial intelligence learn to recognize patterns.

Written from the perspective of a young engineering student, this book grew from a simple habit: looking at ordinary things and asking, “Where is the mathematics here?”

The answer turns out to be: almost everywhere.

If you have ever thought that mathematics was only about equations, Patterns We Don’t See invites you to look again.

The world hasn’t changed. Only the way we look at it has.

About the Book

What if mathematics is hiding in plain sight? A flower on a windowsill. A snowflake falling outside a window. A melody played on a piano. A honeycomb. A crowded city street. A recommendation appearing on your phone. Even a long line at a supermarket. We usually see these things as ordinary. But look a little closer, and mathematics begins to appear. Patterns We Don't See is an accessible journey through the hidden patterns that shape the world around us. Without turning mathematics into a collection of complicated formulas, this book explores the ideas behind symmetry, spirals, Fibonacci sequences, fractals, probability, music, architecture, social networks, algorithms, artificial intelligence, queues, and cities. The book was written by a young cadet at an engineering school in Voronezh, Russia, whose curiosity about mathematics gradually grew beyond the classroom. He began noticing mathematical patterns in places where he had never expected to find them—in nature, music, architecture, technology, transportation, and ordinary everyday situations. You can also check out the author's YouTube, «Mathemaximus Channel». The idea for this book began with a simple observation: mathematics seemed to be appearing everywhere. A few plants on a classroom windowsill led to questions about symmetry and Fibonacci sequences. Snowflakes and honeycombs revealed geometric optimization. Playing the piano brought attention to the mathematical structure of music. Looking at buildings raised questions about proportion and beauty. Later, probability, social networks, algorithms, queues, cities, and artificial intelligence showed that mathematics was not limited to the physical world at all. The more he looked, the more patterns he found. This book is the result of that journey. Why do certain shapes appear again and again in nature? Why do coincidences seem so mysterious? How can friendships be represented as mathematical networks? Why does traffic behave like a flow? How do recommendation systems recognize patterns? And what does mathematics really have to do with beauty? Patterns We Don't See is not a textbook and does not require advanced mathematical knowledge. It is an invitation to look at familiar things differently—to become curious about the structures and patterns hidden behind everyday life. You do not need to be a mathematician to begin. All you need is curiosity. Because mathematics may be much closer than you think.
