We have developed Arduino based acquisition systems to monitor the outdoor air quality in different parts of NYC. Arduino is a popular platform with a microcontroller (small computer system in a microchip) at his heart. Arduino is discussed below. Some systems were very easy to build since the circuitry for the sensor and the calibration were already developed by the company Adafruit (or Grove for the O2 sensor).
The MQ gas sensors (NO2, O3, CO) required more work as sensitivity curves need to be extracted from the datasheet and the relationship (a power function) between the resistance of the sensor and the concentration of the pollutant had to be derived from the sensitivity curves. To tune calibration we used the website breezometer.com that displays the pollutants are a function of location. For the O3 sensor we also used a professional ozone monitor to test the resolution of the sensor and to calibrate it.
