About the Book

Out of Step, Not Out of Place offers a thoughtful and deeply human exploration of giftedness across the full span of life. Moving beyond narrow definitions of intelligence, this book examines what it truly means to think differently — to perceive patterns, question assumptions, and experience the world with unusual intensity.

Drawing on themes of neurodivergence, learning, decision-making, and social belonging, Kim Parker traces the journey of gifted individuals from early childhood through adolescence and into adulthood. Each stage reveals both promise and tension: the early signs that are often misunderstood, the challenges of fitting into structured educational systems, the quiet negotiations of identity during adolescence, and the later realisation, for some, that giftedness was present all along.

This is not simply a book about ability. It is a reflection on difference — how it is recognised, nurtured, or suppressed — and how it shapes both the individual and the environments they inhabit. It speaks to those who have felt out of step with conventional expectations, offering insight without judgement and language for experiences that are often difficult to articulate.

At once analytical and reflective, Out of Step, Not Out of Place invites readers to reconsider what it means to learn, to belong, and to understand one’s own mind. It is a guide, a mirror, and perhaps most importantly, a quiet reassurance that difference need not imply displacement.

About the Author

Kim Parker

Kim Parker is a teacher, technologist, and lifelong student of how human beings learn. He began as a secondary mathematics and computer science teacher, spending twelve years in state and independent schools. As Head of Computers in a large K–12 setting, he saw how often traditional systems overlook neurodivergent, gifted, and introverted minds—an insight that shaped his enduring interest in knowledge and human potential.

He later moved into information technology, working for 27 years as a programmer, database administrator, project manager, systems engineer, enterprise architect, and ultimately Manager of Data Analytics and Knowledge. Across these roles, he observed that learning is rarely linear; it flourishes in curiosity, collaboration, and thoughtful design.

Now semi-retired, Kim writes and teaches, exploring knowledge acquisition, decision-making, neurodivergence, and mentoring through his publication, The Knowledge Economy. At 71, he continues to question assumptions and advocate for a more humane approach to education and work.
