Multivariable Calculus and Optimization Techniques

Multivariable Calculus and Optimization Techniques

Multivariable calculus, classical optimization, vector calculus, and multiple integration — the four pillars every engineer leans on — are gathered here into one connected text instead of four separate modules. Starting with partial and total differentiation, Jacobians, and Taylor's series, the book builds outward into Lagrange multipliers, KKT conditions, Newton–Raphson and gradient descent, then into gradient, divergence, curl, and the great integral theorems of Green, Stokes, and Gauss. Every worked example is carried through in full, with no derivation shortened for brevity. Engineering applications run throughout each chapter, tying the math directly to real design problems. Written by Gangadharaiah YH, Ph.D., it's meant to serve equally as a first course and a lasting reference on the engineer's shelf.

About the Book

Multivariable Calculus and Optimization Techniques brings together, in a single volume, the core mathematical machinery that underlies almost every branch of modern engineering analysis and design. It begins with the calculus of several variables — partial and total differentiation, composite functions and the chain rule, Jacobians, extrema, and Taylor’s series — and builds outward into three closely related disciplines: classical optimization (Lagrange multipliers, Karush–Kuhn–Tucker conditions, Newton–Raphson iteration, Fibonacci search, and gradient descent), vector calculus (gradient, divergence, curl, solenoidal and irrotational fields, and scalar potentials), and integral calculus in several variables (double and triple integrals, line, surface, and volume integrals, and the great integral theorems of Green, Stokes, and Gauss). The book is organised into five chapters. Chapter 1 gathers the whole of multivariable cal culus — partial differentiation, total differentiation, composite functions and the chain rule, Jacobians, extrema, and Taylor’s series — as its six constituent parts. Chapters 2 through 5 then develop optimization, vector calculus, multiple integrals, and vector integral calculus in turn. Every part and section follows a consistent teaching structure: a motivating introduc tion that places the topic in its engineering context, fully worked examples that show every algebraic step, and a set of engineering applications drawn from mechanical, civil, electrical, aerospace, chemical, and process engineering. The aim throughout is not merely to present formulas but to show why each technique is reached for in practice.

Representative applications found in this volume include:

• Heat conduction, wave propagation, and fluid-flow continuity, modelled through partial and total derivatives (Chapter 1).

• Coordinate transformations and error propagation in measurement systems, via the Jaco bian (Chapter 1).

• Minimum-material tank and beam design, and constrained economic and portfolio allo cation, via Lagrange multipliers and KKT conditions (Chapter 2).

• Power-system load-flow and nonlinear calibration problems, via Newton–Raphson itera tion and gradient descent (Chapter 2).

• Electrostatic field and potential calculations, steepest-ascent path planning, and fluid vor ticity analysis, via the gradient, divergence, and curl (Chapter 3).

• Centroid,mass,andmoment-of-inertiacalculationsformachinecomponents,andfluxand circulation problems inelectromagnetics, viamultipleandvectorintegrals(Chapters4–5)
