About the Book

Mastering Ontology Engineering with Protege and Pizza.owl continues in Volume 2, where your ontology stops being a static taxonomy and starts behaving like a real semantic graph.

Building directly on the class hierarchy from Volume 1, this volume covers object properties, inverse properties, and the property characteristics (functional, transitive, symmetric, and more) that determine what a reasoner is actually able to infer. It closes with domain and range, the mechanism that governs which relationships are logically permitted in the first place. Every concept connects back to the Executable Knowledge Architecture (EKA) framework introduced in Volume 1.

As with every volume in this series, each chapter pairs a YouTube walkthrough with the matching eBook chapter and hands-on Protege exercises.

In this volume you'll learn to:

  • Create and use object properties to connect ontology classes
  • Define inverse properties correctly, and why they matter for bidirectional reasoning
  • Understand functional, inverse-functional, transitive, and symmetric property characteristics
  • Use domain and range restrictions to catch modeling errors before they become inconsistencies
  • Connect all of the above back to the EKA framework

This edition includes forewords by Timothy W. Cook (Founder, Semantic Data Charter) and Michael DeBellis, plus their ongoing technical review credited throughout the book.

Best read after Volume 1, though experienced OWL modelers can use it as a standalone reference on object property semantics.
