Understanding Tensor Calculus: From Vector Spaces to General Relativity

Tensors intimidate more students than they should. Most textbooks introduce them by dropping index notation on the page and hoping intuition catches up later. This book takes the opposite approach: every abstract idea is built up from something concrete first — a shopping list, a stress tensor, a hiking trail's steepness — before the formal definition ever appears.

Written to be read on your own, at your own pace, this book is designed so a graduate student can genuinely teach themselves tensor calculus from the ground up — starting with ordinary vector spaces and ending at the Einstein field equations — without a lecturer in the room.

THE BOOK'S PROGRESSION IS A SINGLE CONNECTED STORY, NOT A COLLECTION OF DISCONNECTED TOPICS:

Vector spaces, dual spaces, and tensor products, built from linear algebra you already know
Tensor algebra, the metric tensor, and the covariant derivative
Geodesics, curvature, and the Riemann tensor
Manifolds, differential forms, and the Hodge dual
Special relativity and electromagnetism, expressed in tensor form
General relativity — the Einstein field equations, Schwarzschild and Friedmann spacetimes, and gravitational waves
A closing survey of cosmology, black holes, and modified gravity (f(R) theories and beyond)

EVERY CHAPTER FOLLOWS THE SAME PATTERN: concept, definition, derivation, physical interpretation, worked example, exercises. Along the way you'll find:

Dozens of fully solved problems, worked step by step, not just stated
Physical Insight boxes connecting abstract math to everyday intuition
Boxed Key Results and definitions for fast reference and review
A notation summary table and a \"Common Mistakes\" guide collecting the errors students make most often
Solutions to selected exercises collected at the end of the book, so you can check your own work
Diagrams throughout — including a proper spacetime/light-cone diagram and geodesics on a sphere — not just walls of equations

WHO THIS BOOK IS FOR

This book is intended for senior undergraduate and beginning graduate students in physics and mathematics who have completed calculus, linear algebra, and an introductory mechanics course. No prior exposure to differential geometry or general relativity is assumed.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Dr. Muhammad Ilyas is an Associate Professor at the Institute of Physics, Gomal University, Dera Ismail Khan, Pakistan, working in general relativity, cosmology, and high-energy physics, with a research focus on modified gravity, compact stars, and wormhole geometries. This book grew directly out of his graduate teaching in tensor calculus and general relativity.
