The Sovereign Developer makes the economic and practical case that keeping software private is a legitimate default, not an exception a developer needs to apologize for. Open-source culture treats publishing as the natural endpoint of writing code, but visibility is not the same thing as obligation, and the question worth asking before a repository goes public is not whether open source is good, but what a specific developer gains by making this specific work public, and what they give up to do it. Drawing on economics (opportunity cost, transaction costs, the free-rider problem), software law (liability exposure under emerging regulations like the EU Cyber Resilience Act), and the lived experience of maintainer burnout, the book walks through when private, source-available, and hybrid licensing models actually serve a developer better than open collaboration, and when open source still makes sense. It also covers the practical mechanics: structuring a private engineering practice, managing risk if you do publish, and a decision framework for reassessing a project when the conditions that justified it have changed. The result is a clear-eyed, well-sourced argument for treating software privacy as a rational choice, not a retreat from community.
