Dr. Walther M. Barnard spent decades researching the descendants of Francis Barnard, one of the earliest English settlers of Hartford, Connecticut (by 1644), Hadley, Massachusetts (1659), and Deerfield, Massachusetts (1673). This manuscript was never published during his lifetime because it never became a conventional family history book. Instead, it preserves something arguably more valuable: the raw genealogical research itself, transcribed from years of index cards, library visits, cemetery records, and correspondence with fellow researchers.

Part A covers the main trunk of the Deerfield Barnard line through ten generations, beginning with Francis Barnard and his son Joseph (killed by Indians at the 1695 Massacre at Indian Bridge), continuing through Joseph Jr. and his son Francis, and tracing multiple branches into the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The coverage includes the families of Samuel Barnard, James Harvey Barnard, Walter M. Barnard, and their descendants and collateral lines.

This volume contains detailed genealogical entries with birth, marriage, death, and burial information; historical context from King Philip's War through the Revolutionary War; primary source transcriptions including wills, court records, and period documents; and extensive source citations showing variant information from multiple researchers.
