Engineering Confidence uses qmail, D. J. Bernstein’s famously secure mail server, as a case study in how software earns trust.

This is not a qmail manual. It is a book about design discipline: small components, clear boundaries, reduced privilege, durable queues, careful parsing, and security claims precise enough to be tested in public. It follows qmail from the Sendmail security fatigue of the 1990s through its architecture, its $500 security guarantee, the later Guninski and Qualys controversies, and the lessons that still matter for modern infrastructure.

qmail was not perfect, and that is why it remains useful. Its story shows both the power and the cost of uncompromising design.
