Apache CloudStack — Beyond Deployment

Part 2 — Advanced Operations · Running a Sovereign Cloud on Apache CloudStack 4.22.1.0 LTS

The estate is built — now make it earn. Part 2 turns a sovereign Apache CloudStack cloud into a provable multi-tenant platform: isolation you can put on a contract, tenants onboarded as code, Kubernetes, S3 and GPU as billed products, chaos-drilled HA, compliance evidence sealed immutably, and migration done as engineering rather than a weekend lift-and-shift.

About the Book

By the end of the Foundations volume, the fictional publisher Leaf Spine Books owns a three-city, multi-zone Apache CloudStack 4.22.1.0 LTS cloud — KVM, Ceph, a SONiC leaf-spine fabric — costed, metered, monitored and backed up. But a platform you only run for yourself is a platform running at sixty per cent. Idle silicon is waste.

This volume (Chapters 19–40b) turns a private estate into a provable, sellable, operable cloud platform:

  • Multi-tenancy you can put on a contract — domains, roles, quotas and network isolation, then a worked attempt to breach all three boundaries while CloudStack refuses each one. Isolation proved, not asserted, before the first external tenant pays a penny
  • Everything as code — the whole tenant lifecycle as a reviewed OpenTofu merge request, secrets in a vault, so the hundredth customer is the same effort as the first
  • The deep operational disciplines — storage tiers and QoS, network troubleshooting that turns "the network feels slow" into a located fault, chaos-drilled high availability with a dated scorecard, and performance tuning as a measured loop rather than a bag of copied settings
  • The platform as a product — Kubernetes-as-a-service, S3 object storage on Ceph RGW, GPU workloads as a metered, billed product, and advanced billing where no line lacks a parent and nothing runs silently free
  • Running it for years — compliance automation with sealed evidence, enterprise migration off VMware, AWS and OpenStack, capacity forecasting, upgrades without scheduling your own outage, and the capstone production launch checklist
  • The honest horizon — a deliberately labelled "what if it all went right" story, its reality-check counterpart run through the book's own forecasting discipline, and the Hive Data Centre: many small autonomous edge cells on VXLAN and BGP EVPN, built hands-on in the closing chapters

The same rules hold throughout: every figure is labelled measured, forecast, or illustration; every claim is tested against the live estate; every procedure is rehearsed before it touches production. If you cannot control your infrastructure, you do not own your business — and by the end of this volume, you will be running proof.

About the Author

Michael Hinsley

Mike Hinsley has spent more than three decades with his hands on real infrastructure — from electronics and engineering through operations, security, cloud and SaaS — and has never lost the habit of wanting to understand the machine all the way down. He is the founder of a UK infrastructure consultancy that helps organisations escape per‑core licensing lock‑in by migrating from VMware/Broadcom to sovereign, self‑owned platforms built on Apache CloudStack, with documented client savings of up to 94%. His guiding principle is one he calls GYOCYO — Grow Your Own, Cook Your Own: own the means of a capability rather than rent it as a finished product. He lives it literally. From a smallholding in rural Cheshire he runs large‑scale aquaponics, IoT‑monitored beehives, and a 28.8 kW solar array backed by 90 kWh of battery storage — the same instrument‑everything, owe‑nothing‑to‑anyone thinking he brings to enterprise clients, proven first on his own land. His HIVE‑DC concept — a data centre in a beehive — grew directly out of that overlap. Mike previously presented "Aquaponics, Apiculture, and Advanced Networking with Apache CloudStack" at the CloudStack European User Group in London. He publishes under the Leaf Spine Books imprint, and is preparing to establish a sustainable‑technology education centre uniting aquaponics, beekeeping and cloud infrastructure under one roof.
