About the Book
An engineering manager’s work has multiple dimensions. We are accountable for delivering business outcomes, building teams, and growing individuals. We must be up-to-date with ongoing projects, and at the same time plan strategically and ensure continuity of our teams. Starting in the role is tough, and even after a few years in, you might not get enough exposure to all the aspects of the job.
This book aims to solve this. It contains valuable insights on all aspects of an engineering manager’s responsibilities, from setting up daily team operations to running long-term planning, executing projects, and growing individuals. The book will give you practical advice for building high-performance engineering teams, designing frictionless flow of information, and shaping the culture of the team.
Besides focusing on tools and techniques, the book will teach you how to read the context and make decisions that actually work for your team, company, and situation. It will provide you with tacit knowledge and a data-driven approach that will help you to identify focus areas in your day-to-day job. After reading this book, you’ll be well-prepared to face the challenges of an engineering manager’s role.

About the Authors
Dünya Kırkalı is an engineering leader and software engineer whose journey spans building mobile apps, web services, data pipelines, and visualizations across diverse industries and teams. Along the way, this breadth of experience shaped him into a true generalist. This generalist perspective became his greatest asset when leading engineers from different disciplines, ultimately guiding him toward the field he truly fell in love with: engineering management. Left to his own devices, Dünya enjoys putting on a Joe Pass record and reflecting on ways to create tools and techniques to help engineering managers discover their own global maxima.
Maxim Schepelin is an engineering leader with over a decade of experience across various industries, including game development, e-commerce, and travel. He has mastered both the art and science of management, as well as how to exit both Vim and Emacs. Maxim is passionate about sustainable development practices and continues to explore new ways to build effective engineering teams that deliver value at a predictable pace.
