12 Steps to Achieve Gut & Whole Health
About the Book
I'M INTEGRATIVE GASTROENTEROLOGIST, WILLIAM B SALT II MD, AND I HAVE A VERY IMPORTANT NEW BOOK FOR YOU!
12 STEPS TO ACHIEVE
GUT & WHOLE HEALTH
IBS, SIBO, Gut Microbiome Dysbiosis & Leaky Gut
I combine the best of mainline gastroenterology with integrative, functional, naturopathic, and complementary medicine (here's my practice website: William B Salt II MD).
MY NEW BOOK IS ABOUT FOUR THINGS:
1) GUT SYMPTOMS
THE SYMPTOM TRIAD OF ENTEROPATHY is the most common gastrointestinal (GI) or digestive reason people seek medical diagnosis and care:
* Abdominal pain & discomfort
* Abdominal bloating, distention (enlargement), flatulence (farting), & rumbling/grumbling
* Bowel dysfunction (diarrhea, constipation, or both)
This triad of symptoms originates from the small intestine, colon, or both of THE GUT
2) BRAIN AND BODILY SYMPTOMS TOO
Most people with these gut symptoms also have brain and bodily symptoms.
Examples include fatigue, anxiety/depression, brain fog, headaches, skin problems, fibromyalgia, interstitial cystitis, and chronic pelvic pain.
3) DIAGNOSES & TREATMENT
Multiple diseases, conditions, and disorders must be considered, and usually more than one are present.
Here are the most common diagnoses:
* IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome), which is often caused by bacterial food poisoning
* SIBO (Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth)
* Gut Microbiome Dysbiosis, including SIBO and colonic BLOOM of a microbe called, Methanobrevibacter smithii, which causes or contributes to symptoms, particularly constipation
* MCAS (Mast Cell Activation Syndrome)
* Carbohydrate maldigestion (FODMAPs)
* Sucrose Intolerance
* Gut barrier dysfunction, known as "leaky gut."
(In my book, I'll guide you through my "Map of Differential Diagnosis," which includes these and many other diagnoses.)
4) ACHIEVING GUT AND WHOLE HEALTH
This becomes increasingly important as we age, even if we don't have gut symptoms calling us out to recognize something's very wrong!
Here's what's happening today.
Most who are suffering with the enteropathy triad of symptoms are diagnosed with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). But there are many diagnoses, conditions, and disorders either causing, associated with, or mimicking IBS. (Stress and emotional distress are NOT the cause of IBS, by the way.) Sadly, most aren't being properly diagnosed and treated, and too much unnecessary testing is being conducted, including colonoscopy and scans.
Here's what should be happening today.
There's a renaissance — a revolution in the diagnosis and treatment of enteropathies. People need to become their own expert, so they can assume responsibility for their health and collaborate with selected health care professionals when necessary. If "red flag" concerning features aren't present (such as unexplained weight loss and rectal bleeding), most enteropathies can be diagnosed with non-invasive testing of blood, stool, and breath.
YOU'LL SEE "YOUR BIG PICTURE."
These four quotes express how I see things and the vision I'll share with you:
All disease begins in the gut.
— HIPPOCRATES (The “Father” of Medicine)
Your gut symptoms are calling you out to recognize something is wrong. Chronic inflammation and immune dysfunction, along with disturbance and imbalance of the gut microbiome are responsible for the symptoms and the disease in the gut. Did you also know you have a second brain in the gut?
The whole is more than the sum of its parts.
— ARISTOTLE (Greek Philosopher)
You are a complex system. I call this concept, "The Mind/Body — Brains/Gut Connections" (two brains, many connections)
The gut is not like Las Vegas. What happens in the gut does not stay in the gut.
— ALESSIO FASANO MD, Renowned Harvard pediatric gastroenterologist
The brain, nervous system, and any organ system of the body can be adversely affected by "disease" in the gut.
An Unhealthy, Unhappy Gut = An Unhealthy, Unhappy YOU!
— William Salt MD, integrative gastroenterologist
The key here is integrative MD gastroenterologist. If you recognize yourself here and aspire to take 12 Steps to Achieve Gut & Whole Health, I'll be your guide!
