Engineering as a Leadership System establishes that engineering outcomes are a consequence of operating-model design. Leadership decisions about structure, authority, governance, and feedback determine how effectively an organisation can build and evolve software.

The Engineering Operating Model builds on that foundation. It focuses on the principles and practices that enable organisations to design and operate engineering systems capable of adapting to change.

Every organisation’s engineering operating model is unique. It cannot be copied from another company or adopted from a blueprint. It must be designed to fit the organisation’s current context and continuously adapted as that context evolves.

Markets shift. Products evolve. Customer expectations change. Teams grow and reorganise. An operating model that cannot adapt to these signals will eventually constrain delivery and learning.

While operating models must be locally designed, certain principles consistently hold true. Organisations that align their engineering practices with these principles are better able to respond to signals from their market, their customers, their products, and the engineers who build them.

This book describes those principles and the practices that enable organisations to design and evolve an adaptive engineering operating model.
