Intercultural communication is key to successful learning, especially for individuals working in a language or cultural community. An effective classroom setting is one where students are able to share their knowledge and communicate with others, building a sense of belonging. Schools do not always offer this opportunity, however, and that can leave students feeling alienated. So, how can you create an environment that allows students to learn and be comfortable?

One way to make your classes more engaging is to make sure that students know how to use language tools, such as pictures, posters, and other objects to communicate in the cultural contexts in which they are being studied. Most textbooks will include some form of artwork in the text. Students can use these artistic works as tools for translating conversations from one culture to another. In fact, the importance of cultural tools is part of the study of linguistic diversity. The use of artwork, or cultural items, is often emphasized in cultural literacy programs.

Students should also be encouraged to use their imagination. They should have the freedom to use all of the senses and translate their thoughts and experiences into pictures. However, most students should be guided by the teacher or professor in the use of their eyes, ears, and hands. It is important to remember that without accurate communication, the learning experience is ineffective.

The use of pictures, posters, and other objects, when paired with a competent instructor, can be used as graphic design in the classroom. A student can learn how to read a poster, translate it, and then understand the meaning of it, while using their other senses.

Also, in the classroom, it is important for students to be able to use one-on-one time to speak in multiple languages. Teachers should encourage students to write in English and to read in a variety of ways. This helps students become more comfortable speaking inmultiple languages, and the skills learned will be applied to all aspects of their lives.

Students should be taught to be able to find common ground. When people learn about each other's culture and how to communicate with each other, the process of learning goes faster. Students learn about other cultures by way of conversation, observation, and listening to what others say. When students learn about culture and learn how to communicate with other people who live in different cultural environments, the ability to communicate becomes a language, or tool.

Making the students' communication, a language is the first step in helping them to adapt to other cultures. For instance, if a student comes from Africa and learned English through movies and television, then they should learn the phrases, grammar, and sentence structure that they will use in the United States. Once they are able to speak the American language, they can translate it back to their native language. They may even use the movie phrases and grammar to learn about their culture.

It is also important to teach students the appropriate language when communicating with each other. Often, those in a classroom are not comfortable with speaking in a language other than their own. When they are asked to read in their native language, then the students will feel at home.

Classes should be fun, but they should also include a variety of interactive materials that students can use to communicate with other students and in other situations. In this way, there is no limit to the languages and cultural backgrounds that students can learn to communicate.

One element of intercultural course is to create a sense of belonging. The students in your class should feel like they belong, and that they can learn from the others. The same idea applies in real life. If people learn to feel connected to others, and to respect others as individuals, then they are more likely to interact in a civil way and build on their communication skills.

Taking an intercultural course can be an eye-opening experience for students. However, there are several other factors that can make this experience more enjoyable. and more meaningful for students.

Students who are immersed in their culture will begin to learn how the people within their country are living their everyday lives. and they will discover that there is a wealth of information available online.
