Some Things About Dance

About the Book

Dancing does many things to us. It thrills, challenges, sustains, frightens, hurts, and confronts us. It also fills us with immense pleasure.

Some Things About Dance is a collection of playful ideas or things about the art of dance. Each brief chapter is self-contained, and covers a range of topics to do with things like collaboration, creativity, communication and practice. The book is primarily written for people interested in dance as an art form – dancers, teachers, choreographers, audiences – but will also appeal to creatives and managers who are seeking surprising or alternative ways to be inspired or challenged.

The author, Simon Ellis, is a dancer, choreographer and writer with 30 years of experience in the arts. His website is skellis.net

Please note that any profits from this book will be divided 80/20 between Chisenhale Dance Space and the freelance artist (and illustrator for this book) Hamish MacPherson.

About the Author

Simon Ellis
Simon Ellis

Simon Ellis is an artist and scholar working with practices of choreography, filmmaking and dance. He was born in the Wairarapa in Aotearoa/New Zealand, but now lives in the UK and works at the Centre for Dance Research (C-DaRE), University of Coventry. He grew up in a family where politicised conversations about human dignity, consumerism and even technology were common. These conversations have shaped his values as an artist, and underpin much of what his practice is about, and how it is conducted. He also thinks about the ways humans might value things that are not easily commodified, and likes to imagine a world filled with people who are sensitive to their own bodies, and the bodies of others.
