About the Book
Part 3 of the Catalyst On-Chain Impact Series
When Cardano needed a more efficient and reliable way to build smart contracts, MLabs delivered with Plutarch v2 — an advanced, open-source toolkit redefining how developers write and optimize Plutus Core validators. Designed as a next-generation embedded Domain-Specific Language (eDSL) in Haskell, Plutarch v2 combines expressiveness, safety, and performance to empower scalable decentralized application development on Cardano.
Building on the foundations of Plutarch v1, this Fund 9 initiative introduced a redesigned core language architecture, a new intermediate representation, and multi-backend compilation support for Plutus IR, Haskell, PureScript, and UPLC. Its generalized effect system improved contract reliability and auditability, while developer experience enhancements — including clearer error messaging and zero-cost abstractions — made the framework more accessible and efficient.
Delivered with USD$73,040 in Catalyst funding over an eight-month timeline, Plutarch v2 successfully achieved its technical milestones and established itself as a cornerstone of Cardano’s developer infrastructure. Already adopted by leading DeFi protocols like Minswap and Liqwid, it provides the foundation for faster, safer, and more maintainable smart contract deployment.
As part 3 of the 12-part Catalyst On-Chain Impact Series funded under Project Catalyst grant #1300150, this case study highlights how targeted developer tooling investments can drive ecosystem scalability, reduce complexity, and accelerate innovation across the Cardano network.
