About the Book
Title: Mission Accomplished
Composer: Dave Nicolette, op. 4, 2003
Mission Accomplished is a march written to commemorate the successful accomplishment of Operation Desert Storm in Iraq. Originally entitled Iraqi Freedom March, it was given to the United States Marine Band as a gift. Before long it became clear that there was to be no Iraqi freedom, and the US mission in the Middle East was altogether unclear. The march was re-titled Mission Accomplished as a nod to the large banner under which President George W. Bush had declared victory on the deck of the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln on May 1, 2003. The title has slightly ironic overtones.
Musically, the march generally follows a traditional American march form except for the key changes in the trio. It has themes suggestive of Middle Eastern and British music.
