About the Book
It began in disaster. The fire that destroyed her home also destroyed her business, and all her dreams. Though her loved ones tried to console her, she felt stifled and driven away from the city. She thought she’d take a short vacation to get back on her feet… but she fell in love instead.
With the influence of Tom Wolf, an 83-year-old Native sage, Kat gradually fell in love with nature, the Earth, and the way of the spirit. With his guidance, she will know the power of gratitude, and unlearn so many things taught by her modern culture. She will learn to live with the Earth, and experience the kind of freedom she’d once dreamed about in her youth. He will teach her to listen to the symphony of nature, read a whole story in one bobcat track, and understand the world in a completely new way.
Her journey will lead her to her Vision, in the form of a buckskin dress… and her real true love.
About the Author
At 16 years old I was introduced to the books of Tom Brown, Jr., and through him I met the legacy of Stalking Wolf. To me, it seemed he contained all the wisdom I wanted to possess, and represented the person I wanted to become. Stalking Wolf - the real Grandfather - was an elder native Apache, who knew precisely how to survive in nature. Living WITH the Earth is an art, a science, and a spiritual practice that he embodied in every way. He always lived wild and free; not on a reservation. He not only preserved the wisdom and experience of the old survival skills, but he also learned the religious beliefs of everyone he encountered in his journeys.
After high school I earned a degree in Natural Resources. I held small jobs teaching children about nature and the environment, but it felt superficial. I believe there is something deep inside - all of us - that wants to be closer to the Earth. To know, and understand, where we came from... to want for nothing... to be truly free. All children are fascinated with flowing water; when given a chance, they all chew on grass stems, and build forts. Who isn't captivated with the dancing flames of a bonfire? It's written in our genetic code. No matter how far away from the Earth we have become, we all yearn to go back to our roots.
It's taken almost half my life to sort through the knowledge I've accumulated, and organize it into my own wisdom. That is to say, I've only just begun to LIVE the truths taught to me... to embrace MY Vision.
If the lessons of this book are the lecture part of the Vision, our farm is the practicum. My family and I now run a small CSA (community supported agriculture) in central Ohio, growing fresh produce for local customers. On this land, we will practice new primitive skills to be described in upcoming books. I can only know what I've experienced. I can only live one day at a time. But this is my Vision, and I'm dedicated to it.
Thank you for joining me on my path. I truly hope that my words will aid you on your journey, as well.
