Introduction to Domain Specific Languages

Introduction to Domain Specific Languages

Embedding domains into your programming language

About the Book

Domain Specific Languages have been used for a wide variety of purposes over the last decades. We can find all sorts of DSLs being used for all sorts of purposes. DSLs have been used in games for configuration files and scripting (think of old DOS games where you have .cfg files or old point and click adventure games). DSLs have been used to create models and meta-models of software (UML, Promela, Alloy, and so on). Several types of software testing frameworks provide DSLs to specify the tests (unit testing frameworks are a form of DSL. Testing automation frameworks usually have an associated scripting language for describing the test cases). Even for concurrent, parallel and distributed computing there are several DSLs that can be used.

DSLs simplify problems by creating a language that caters specifically to that domain. The problem then is to think about what is needed for that domain and to provide a proper implementation of the DSL. Several approaches can be taken to solve this. In this book we will talk about embedding a DSL into a target programming language and see how it can be used by other people.
