About the Book
A distant future. The Mind is no longer a captive in its meaty shell, it can roam from machine to machine. The powers that be wage terrible and endless wars, unchecked in the vast and silent distances that are space. Soldiers are children with pliable minds that never age, learning from hundreds of thousands of combat drops, they wake to battle and die each day - never alive, never dead, never free.
Freeing the Mind from the body did not come without cost, and humanity has borne the burden of that decision for ages. Strange, nearly mystical links exist between each mind and its original host, and separating them for too long can have disasterous consequences. The Fray, those Minds that have been lost or corrupted, grow on the edges of human space, a not so distant threat that can no longer be ignored.
“Long ago we realized we would never find our gods, nor would they find us - figments of our own delusions or lost to us for time unknown. So we created them again, that deep and ancient vanity, not in our image but of our selves, we elevated the prestigious and great among us to be as Gods. Alas, for every one God of worthy Mind, ten more fell into Darkness and were Devoured.”
