About the Book
I am a developer and I have bipolar disorder and ADD.
In 2013, I started giving a talk called Developers and Depression at tech conferences and meetups. I've been blown away by the response from the tech community. I assumed that there were people out there like me. What I didn't expect were just how many in our community have been affected by mental illness: rather you're someone who suffers from it directly, or someone with a struggling spouse, coworker, or employee.
I have ADD, so writing a book is a daunting task for me. But then it hit me:
- I've been fairly successful at writing short blog posts.
- My audience also has short attention spans.
So instead of setting out to write your standard work of non-fiction with 5000 word chapters and a cohesive narative structure, this book is more of a collection of essays that should be easy to consume piecemeal while sitting on the toilet. It will be three parts:
- My story
- YMMV advice
- Stories from other developers
A lot of this content is available on my blog.
- Developers and Depression
- How to Find a Physciatrist
- Missing the Midterm
- Using it as a crutch
- Bipolar
